Owner Operator Insurance Detroit – Learning About Exclusions: Racing, Part 2

We had just been introduced to our two wanna-be racers, Youngster Jimmy and Youngster Joey. They aren’t particularly mischievous lads, but they do have a knack for street racing, a potentially dangerous activity.

They both have spent a lot of time and money modifying their rides for this hobby of theirs.

Unfortunately for them, the next big upcoming event was a special event. They weren’t going to be allowed to use their usual rides. Rather, they had to race a truck. Not a pick-up truck, either, but a fully fledged semi-truck. They did not, however, have to lug around a heavy trailer while they raced.

Both Jimmy and Joey were a little sad about this, having spent so much time working on their own cars, but it still was something new and interesting to try out. It was also very fortuitous for the two that Jimmy worked driving a semi-truck around. The only thing left to do now was to get Joey into one.

The race was a bit of a ways off, which did give Jimmy and Joey time to scheme and prepare and acquire and modify their rides. This, and the fact that Jimmy had a semi available already, was about all they had going for them to participate in the event, but they were determined to get involved with this race…

Owner Operator Insurance Michigan – Learning About Exclusions: Racing, Part 1

Previously, we had just gone over a section of exclusions that would nullify any coverage your insurance company would be able to provide you. These listed three separate incidents where a man had somehow caused an accident, two of them resulting in him not being covered, and one where he was covered.

Today, we’ll be continuing our theme of exclusions, but we’ll be talking specifically about racing.

EXCLUSIONS – Racing

Covered “autos” while used in any professional or organized racing or demolition contest or stunting activity, or while practicing for such contest or activity. This insurance also does not apply while that covered “auto” is being prepared for such a contest or activity.

What does this have to do with commercial auto insurance? Read on to find out.

In this scenario, we’ll be following two semi-pro street racers who are irresponsible enough to void their insurance by racing in their everyday vehicles. Although, with all of the money they are willing and able to invest in modifying and tricking out their cars to be able to race, maybe they aren’t so worried if they total their car and have to pay entirely out of pocket for repairs/replacements. Or perhaps they simply lack the foresight.

At any rate, we’ll be meeting two youngsters: Youngster Jimmy and Youngster Joey. They are part of a collaborative race team, and always want to race together.

Youngster Jimmy is the least young of the two, at 29. He’s a portly lad, and leads a more sedentary lifestyle. Outside of the racing scene, he’s actually a truck driver for a company, transporting freights. He’s rather greasy and unkempt, and it’s all he can do to simply get up in the mornings sometimes.

While he isn’t particularly happy with his job, it pays his bills and then some. He’s able to put quite a bit of money into suping out his car to feed the light of his life, racing. It’s the only thing that is currently keeping him going, and he’s fine with that. His job also isn’t so bad. He at least gets to drive around.

Youngster Joey is still essentially a kid. At only 23, he’s just beginning to realize how the world works. He only just recently moved out of his parents’ house, but he has been working and been able to save money. His parents were gracious enough to not make him pay rent, although he did have to buy his own food and pay his fair share of utility costs. This allowed him to invest quite a bit into his racing hobby.

Quite unlike Youngster Jimmy, Youngster Joey is a suave man. With as much charisma as he has looks, it comes as a shock to find him in the company of Youngster Jimmy. Nevertheless, the two are very good friends. Best friends, even. Joey doesn’t see an issue with it and he enjoys Jim.

These two have been in the racing scene for all of three whole years, so they aren’t the most experienced people, but they have learned quite a lot in those three years. The heats they typically are in are just normal, run-of-the-mill organized races like you might see in movies. It can be rather dangerous, as they certainly drive very fast through the blocked-off track.

The kind of cars they use are usually coups, two-doors, as they offer the lightest weight. Youngster Jimmy has put a lot of time into fine tuning his car, even so far as to hollow out the doors of any electronics.

He’s attached a rather excessive spoiler on the back to keep traction at high speeds, and it’s an obnoxious electric blue color with yellow racing stripes on it. He’s gutted the speaker system, and in the trunk he’s installed a NOS for a little cheeky action when he needs it.

Joey’s ride is a bit more humble, him being a bit younger and still with his parents. He’s taken a much stealthier approach so his parents wouldn’t catch on to his very risky hobby. His car is simply a black two-door. He got it used a few years ago, and it didn’t come with electric windows or any fancy other gadgets, so he didn’t feel the the need to modify it much outside of what it was.

They race fairly often. Whether it’s in the city streets or on a span of freeway somewhere, they try to make every race they can. Unfortunately, they aren’t particularly good at it yet. However, they feel like their luck is about to change.
